Cross
Training turned Ultra!
Archery has been the main sport
of my life for over 10 years and
as a part of my training,
running has always been an
important addition to keep my
heart rate low and my cardio
conditioning high.
After
relocating to Germany, I was
eager to shoot at the German
Nationals but at the final
regional event to qualify I was
shocked to learn that I would
not be allowed to compete at the
National level despite shooting the
qualifying scores. The
rules in place state that I must
be a resident of Germany and
member of a German club for one
year and I was six days short of
this requirement.
Naturally I was very
dissappointed that my archery
season was cut short and
I struggled with that thought...
I have only ever been unable to
compete due to injuries and now
for the first time in many years I
was in great shape... what
irony!
Under other
circumstances, I may have been
content to stay at home and play
at sites like

instead, but I had already put
in so much time training that I
was keen to take part in a more
physical competition!
So, I
decided not to waste my
potential and on a whim I signed up to run
the Berlin Marathon in September
2010. Very new to long
distance running, I sought the
help of a local club. In
Berlin there are so many running clubs I
couldn't decide. However,
the decision was made for me
when I discovered the
Langstreckenlauf Gemeinschaft
Berliner Mauerweg (Long-Distance
Runners of the Berlin Wall
Trail) or
LG Mauerweg.
Due to my
unusual love affair with the
Berlin Wall, I am always running
the Mauerweg trail that marks
where the former border
surrounded West Berlin.
When I realized the LG Mauerweg
was a running club dedicated to
the Berlin Wall trail and also the
remembrance of the Berlin Wall,
a door opened for me in more
ways than one. I found a
wonderful group of runners who
share a common respect of the
Berlin Wall and at the same time
they have helped guide me into a new
sport, the world of ultra
distance running! So long
as my back holds up, I look
forward to the adventures of
pushing the limits of these
skinny legs that have stood me
up on the archery shooting line
for so many good years and many
more, I hope!
